A number of “leading food and drink brands” which will be “new to Grimsby” are close to signing up for the proposed new £20 million leisure development at Freshney Place Shopping Centre.

Plans for the entertainment venue, which will feature a nine-screen cinema and seven restaurants, were unveiled earlier this year.

The development at the Riverhead was shown to residents during a two-day public consultation in April when drawings of the ambitious complex were put on display.

Maurice Fitzgerald, development director of BMO Real Estate Partners - the firm tasked with managing the project - confirmed that advanced discussions were underway with a number of leading food and drink brands about opening at the venue.

He said: “The exciting development will house a brand new cinema, as well as seven new restaurant units which will be home to a host of leading national operators new to Grimsby.”

“The project will provide both a boost to the evening economy capital investment, new jobs and a quality offer.

“Negotiations are at an advanced stage and we look forward to being able to formally announce the exciting names as soon as we are able after the planning process.”

If the plans are approved, contractors hope to be on site towards the end of the year.

It is expected construction would take between 12 and 14 months with the development potentially ready for its first customers at the end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019.

The new build will link directly to the existing car park, providing disabled access direct to the foyer of the cinema.

A total of 100 constructions jobs will be filled at any one time while Freshney Place Riverhead is being constructed, with as many as 250 vacancies created during times of intense development. Some 350 jobs will be created in the long term.

Meanwhile, work on the new Primark store at the shopping centre is continuing with an expected opening date in late summer or early autumn.

The £4.3 million development will see the budget clothing retailer’s floor space increase from 10,000 sq ft to 47,000 sq ft, with 34,200 sq ft of retail space across two floors. It will be largest store in Grimsby when it opens.

The expansion is expected to create more than 120 retail jobs with recruitment likely to begin later in July.
