Cleethorpes and Humberston beaches receive top grade at the Seaside Awards
25th May 2018
Four beaches in Cleethorpes and Humberston have been awarded the highest honour at the Seaside Awards, which is a huge boost for tourism in preparation for the summer season.
Cleethorpes North and Central beaches and Humberston Fitties and Marine Embankment all received top marks and the coveted Seaside Award itself.
Beaches are ranked in the awards for the quality of their facilities, water and environmental management.
"This is great recognition of the hard work and dedication the council departments and others involved put in to making the resort a top-class place to work, stay and play," Councillor Matt Patrick said.
"There's some really strict criteria for local authorities to achieve these awards, and we're really pleased that we've been able to keep up the high standards for more than 10m visitors that come to the resort each year."
All four beaches received the same grade last year.
148 beaches around the country's coast managed to achieve the top honour from Keep Britain Tidy, who run the awards.
Beaches that were good but fell short of the top standards were given the Blue Flag award.
The Seaside Award criteria
All beaches are graded for information, environmental management and safety, as well as water quality for bathing beaches.
The beach should have a map, code of conduct and information about the water quality.
The beach should be clean, and have appropriate bins and toilet facilities. Natural debris should be left on the beach and waste should be removed.
Safety and services
There should be an adequate number of lifeguards and first-aid equipment, along with emergency plans for pollution risks.
The water should be regularly sampled, and no water waste or sewage should affect the beach.
Keep Britain Tidy said: "The success of the 148 beaches in reaching the very high standards demanded by both awards is testament to all those who have worked so hard to protect and improve our beaches – from beach managers and volunteers to local people and businesses.
"When you enjoy a trip to a beach flying an international Blue Flag or Seaside Award, you know you are on one of the safest, cleanest and very best in the country."
The awards are designed to guarantee holiday-goers that the beach will meet the highest standards.
As bathing beaches, these destinations also need to meet criteria relating to the water quality.
Further down the coast, Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea, Ingoldmells and Skegness were all given the Blue Flag award in 2017.
