Glassware brand Libbey has selected Lewis and 23 others to participate in the next round of its Glassology design competition.

Launched for those who work in the ‘high-end’ drinks industry, Libbey wants to find the next generation of innovative glass in which to enjoy the perfect drink.

Contestants are asked to design a glass, with the best 24 selected to travel to Portugal and Amsterdam to present their ideas.

The winner gets their glass made, getting 250 pieces themselves as well as being a Libbey Brand Ambassador on a trip to the Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans.

Lewis has made the final 24 with his Precipice Precipice design idea – a glass that is shaped to allow a perfect fit for an ice sphere, which is the latest trend for keeping a drink cool.

Of his design, Lewis says: “There is a trend towards the very elegant ice sphere to keep a drink cool. But there is an issue with the glass it is used in.

“I have long believed that a flat-bottomed glass should not contain a rounded piece of ice and so came up with a glass with a rounded base to accommodate a sphere - giving a better ration of drink to ice contact.

"I also gave the glass a small stem, so it can be held without a hand warming up the drink.”

Lewis is delighted to be going to Portugal for the next round and hopes his idea will see his glass being used in bars soon.
