Former Mayor of Cleethorpes opens granddaughter’s trendy new barber’s shop

A former Mayor of Cleethorpes has cut the ribbon on her granddaughter’s new "man cave" themed barber shop on Wellowgate.
Bex Barbers was opened by 82-year-old Margaret Howes, who was Mayor of Cleethorpes in 1989.
Owner Rebecca Wright, 38, said she would not have been able to open the shop if it hadn't been for her grandmother’s support.
She said: “Bex Barbers was opened by me and my grandma, who was the Mayor of Cleethorpes in 1989.
“It was her who helped me do this, I wouldn’t have been able to afford the shop without her.
“I told her I would open my own salon immediately if I could afford to do it, and she gave me the push to get started.”
The opening of Bex Barbers saw Rebecca achieve a goal she’s worked towards for 22 years.
She said: “Opening my own salon is something I have always really wanted to do.
“I love my job and I have been doing it for 22 years so I just thought why not now."
Rebecca, from Grimsby, began her career at Wakefield's Barber Shop in Cleethorpes, and she has since worked at numerous salons across the area.
She said: "I originally started out at Wakefield’s where I did my apprenticeship, and then I was there for another two years."
But now Rebecca has her own salon, and she can decorate it according to her own style – and using her brother's artwork.
"I was aiming for a ‘man cave’ or boy’s bedroom sort of theme – just making it really boyish and bright," she said.
"I think it turned out really well."
Rebecca now hopes to use her salon to raise money for charities who strive to make the world autism friendly.
She said: “I want to start doing things for charity – there are quite a few that I'd like to support.
“Mostly, I want to do something for a charity supporting autism because there are members of my family who are autistic.
“I’d also love to take part in Brave the Shave when we’re more established."
Brave the Shave is a Macmillan event in which thousands of men and women have their heads shaved to stand alongside those fighting cancer.
Bex Barbers is open 9am - 5pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am - 7pm Thursday, and 9am - 4pm Saturday.
