Future of Food event back again for 2018

A HUGELY successful event that debuted last year is to make a return in 2018.
The Future of Food was hosted by Grimsby Institute and Seafish, the industry authority, with more than 1,000 young adults and students attending as they looked at potential career paths.
With exhibitors and a networking lunch for businesses, the vibrant event had many bases covered, with organisers planning to serve up a similar dish next month.
Karen Galloway, (pictured right), former head of marketing at Seafish has been lined up to speak, having served the organisation for more than a decade, first in a consumer marketing role, before heading up the full portfolio. She remains a trustee of Billingsgate Training School, and prior to seafood worked with cheese, chocolate and alcohol. She now runs her own consultancy Pink Shoe Thinking.
She will be joined by Amanda Perry, (below left), a successful entrepreneur who started her first business Fancie from her kitchen table in 2008, armed with nothing but a domestic mixer, a book of recipes and a blank refusal to listen to the word ‘no’.
As a child she had a passion for baking and as she grew older she knew that she wanted to turn this great love of cake into her career. After forging a career as a pastry chef, she founded Fancie, taking it to a chain of seven shops, 70 staff and turning over a million pounds. However, fast-growth saw it over-stretched and it ceased trading, only for her to start a new online retail business ‘Bakes Box’. It is now a high-end supplier to Fenwicks, Selfridges and John Lewis, with thousands of consumers enjoying her monthly baking box subscription online.
In addition she runs a successful agency coaching and mentoring businesses in growth and marketing and is a mentor for The Prince’s Trust.
Julie Snowden, English account manager for Seafish, said: “I think they will really inspire students in attendance as they tell their stories of getting into the industry, and what they have done.
“We also have exhibitors, with Young’s Seafood on board, and live demonstrations again. We also have Emma McKeating, who will deliver a big fish counter.”
The Gold Merit trained award-winning fishmonger works for Tesco in Stoke, but despite the in-land base is a huge advocate of what happens in the Grimsby area, having been at Humber Seafood Summit this summer.

“The event offers our students an invaluable opportunity to network with some of the industry’s most influential employers. “The Future of Food will showcase a wide variety of career opportunities available to young people and aims to link employers with the talent of tomorrow.”
The event takes place on February 22, from 10am to 4pm.
