Customers are beaming like Cheshire cats thanks to the wonderful welcome at the new tearoom.

The new MadHatters Tea Room at the junction of Brighowgate and Wellowgate opens tomorrow (Wednesday) with a fanfare fit for the Queen of Hearts.

Characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic, The Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland will be making guest appearances at the opening.

Emily was a trainer at Humberside Airport until over a year ago and decided she would fly solo with her business venture.

She saw the former Fish and Chick take-away was for sale and jumped at the chance.

“I saw the big windows looking out on to the town centre and thought it would be ideal as a tearoom," said Emily.

“This is something we are short of in the town centre and I thought it would bring new life to Brighowgate. We have a new vintage clothing shop opened next door and other new shops in the area.”

Emily added: “We wanted something that was different and a little quirky. this won’t be your average tearoom buts adds a fun factor.”

MadHatters will be offering breakfasts, lunches and takeaways, thanks to the four staff Emily has employed.

Emily’s dad Guy Aisthorpe was delighted when he heard the news of the new venue because he used to work in Fish and Chick peeling and cutting potatoes as a 14-year-old.

He later graduated to be assistant manager.

After the takeaway closed it became offices for the probation service.

But with help from Guy and friends it has been transformed into a plush, character-filled tearoom, with kitchen, counter, storage area and toilets.

It will be open from 8am to 4pm Monday to Saturday and available for private functions on Sundays.

Emily is already taking bookings for children’s parties, baby showers and birthday parties.

The venue also caters for those with special diets that are gluten-free and wheat free and vegans.

There is also a small play area for children with drawing equipment and toys.

Emily, who is 30 weeks pregnant is hoping her new arrival will soon be enjoying the children’s corner.

She is proud of the many Alice in Wonderland decorations which adorn the tearoom including sign writing of some of the famous quotes from the book.

One says: “Have I gone mad? I’m afraid so, you’re entirely bonkers. But I will tell you a secret, all the best people are.”
