DONG Energy received 250 applications for its offshore wind apprenticeship scheme in the first week, it has been revealed .
The Danish giant, investing £6 billion in the Humber this decade, has joined forces with Grimsby Institute to deliver the three-year course for budding turbine technicians.
It will feature a first year of classroom-based learning, followed by two years on site, with operations and maintenance for Westermost Rough and the emerging Race Bank wind farms controlled from Grimsby.
Hornsea will follow – which will be the biggest wind farm in the world, as the tow builds on the current 1GW of installed capacity to 2.6GW by 2020.
The students will be taught in the new £7 million virtual training centre, Modal at Immingham.
A minimum of four apprenticeship placements will be available, with the intake starting in September.
If they successfully complete the programme they will become full-time Dong employees as it builds towards a Grimsby workforce of 500. Applications close on July 2
