Top town cocktail maker wows judges in international competition to make the final six

COCKTAIL expert and Grimsby businessman Lewis Parry is putting the finishing touches to an innovative glass design, before presenting his idea to industry experts at a major international event.

Top town cocktail maker wows judges in international competition to make the final six

Lewis, who is general manager at popular town centre venue The Curious Cat, is one of only six people to reach the finals of the world Glassology design competition.

Organised by glassware brand Libbey, the competition asks those who work in the ‘high-end’ drinks industry to come up with a design for a new ‘iconic’ glass in which people can enjoy the perfect drink.

Lewis’ Precipice design idea – a glass that is shaped to allow a perfect fit for an ice sphere – saw him go up against 140 others, to reach the last 24 semi-finalists.

As a result, he spent two days in Portugal, where he attended workshops by Libbey designers, and enjoyed masterclasses with bar professionals.

“This was a fantastic learning opportunity and, of course, such an experience gives you fresh ideas for your own design,” said Lewis.

Back in Grimsby, Lewis has refined his design further and is now preparing to present his idea at the finals of the competition, having reached the last six. These are being held at The Perfect Bar Show in Amsterdam, in May. The winner will see their glass go into full production. Thanks to Libbey, Lewis’ partner Ellie will be there to support him.

“What an opportunity this will be, and it all goes to further the reputation of our venue here and put Grimsby on the map for the right reasons,” said Lewis.

Lewis will be on the central stage in Amsterdam, where he will present how his shaped glass can accommodate an ice sphere – which is the latest trend for keeping a drink cool. He will also be creating the drink to go with it.

“As the ice sphere idea originated from Japan, I will be using Japanese whisky – but the rest is a secret for now,” added Lewis.
