John Somerscales Ltd

John Somerscales Ltd is a 114 year old road haulage company that specialises in the transportation of heavy and abnormal loads as well as general cargo.

John Somerscales Ltd

The company uses its diverse fleet of heavy haulage tractor units and specialised trailers to support the supply chain for the oil and gas, manufacturing, chemical, steel and construction industries across the Humber as well as the wider UK.

About the project

John Somerscales Ltd applied for £90,000 to support a £530,000 project to refurbish premises in Immingham, close to key customers at one of the largest and most successful dock complexes in the UK.

Due to previous expansion, the company’s current site had reached full capacity leaving no physical room for the business to expand and grow further. To take advantage of the key emerging markets in the Humber, including offshore and onshore wind developments, the corresponding growth in heavy haulage and the associated maintenance of trailers and trucks it was therefore necessary to relocate to a
larger site.

Somerscales found an ideal site located close to the dock, the Humber bank and the highway network however the site required re-developing to create a fit-for-purpose, modern transport and maintenance facility. The development will be completed by the end of 2014.

Job creation

As a direct result of this investment, 7.5 direct jobs will be created within the organisation.

The future

John Somerscales, Managing Director of the company, said, “Regional Growth Funding helped us to bring this project forward instead of seeing incremental changes to the site as cashflow allowed. The RGF grant has allowed the company to expand giving us the opportunity to bid for work that we would previously have been unable to service because
of the constraints of the old site.

“As a long-standing local family business, we’re committed to supporting the area and offering employment opportunities that can be taken by local people.”
