A £50 million contract has been awarded by oil giant Phillips 66 to James Fisher Marine Services Ltd.

The company, already operating out of Grimsby in the renewables sector, has won a 10-year integrated marine services contract with Humber Refinery.

It will be tasked with ensuring the safe and successful delivery of 15 million cubic metres of crude oil per year to one of the most sophisticated petro-chemical plants in Europe.

The South Killingholme facility supplies almost 20 per cent of the UK’s fuel demand.

Further building on its success as an integrator of complex marine and offshore projects, the 171-year-old British firm will be responsible for the provision of a wide range of services, drawing on its extensive experience as a world-leader in the safe transfer of oil at sea, to ensure safe and efficient offloading operations at Tetney monobuoy. 

James Fisher will deliver offshore and subsea operations, supporting the safe arrival, connection, and departure of around 110 tankers a year,  including specialist diving services and buoy maintenance.

As part of the contract, which gets underway this month, the company will also manage three vessels.

The monobuoy was established in 1975, with tanker Leonidas the first to discharge in July that year, pictured above.

It was replaced in 2004, with the 272-tonne new monobuoy shipped over from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates to Grimsby Docks, before being installed in the Humber approaches, three miles off land.  It is designed to last more than a quarter of a century. 

James Fisher’s project delivery team will be located within Phillips 66’s offices, and the Barrow-in-Furness business is to “endeavour to deliver further contractual efficiencies, with the supply of additional products and services to help support safe and effective terminal operations as required”.

No details on job creation or transfer have yet been released.
