The committee threw their full support behind the scheme at a meeting today, as councillors praised the “very exciting” development that is touted to “bring families back to the town centre”.

The plans have been in the pipeline for a number of years and were first unveiled to shoppers earlier this year. Impressive artists impressions have been released showing how the huge development will look once built.

It's also been confirmed that The Barge will be a key part of the development after a campaign to save it.

There had been fears for its future when the developer did not initially include it in the plans.

Following a presentation of the scheme to councillors, Morris Fitzgerald, a representative of the developer, explained how 100 new construction jobs and 250 long term jobs will be created if the scheme is approved.

He said: “This is a culmination of a number of years of hard work. Every centre should offer a reason to visit. The overall offer of a town centre is critical.

“Negotiations are ongoing with four restaurants, all new to Grimsby.

“This is an opportunity to approve a proposal that the town can be proud of.”

Murmurs of the development were first heard back in 2014, and councillors spoke of how the it is “long overdue”, and were passionate about how the scheme will positively impact Grimsby and the future of the town.

During the meeting a council planning officer spoke of how if approved, the scheme would be a “key catalyst” to rebalance the economy of the town centre.

Chair of the committee meeting, councillor Mike Burton (Lab), moved the application for approval, a notion which was unanimously backed up when councillors cast a vote.

Cllr Burton, said: “This is a very exciting development. If you look at all cities they move on, change and adapt.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for people to be able to go out at night and enjoy themselves in Grimsby.”
