New operations director appointed at Young’s Seafood

A new group operations director has been appointed by Young’s Seafood as the company prepares for the retirement of the long-serving Steve Lidgett.

Duncan McIntyre, who has 26 years experience in food and consumer-facing businesses, will head up the company’s manufacturing, bringing experience from the UK, Europe and Asia, as the senior leadership team is bolstered. 

He arrives from Nomad Foods where he was supply chain director, responsible for the manufacturing process and distribution of finished goods, turning over a total of 300,000 tonnes of frozen fish, vegetables and meals annually.

Mr McIntyre had joined it the year after it had bought Findus’ European operations from the then-wider Young’s business. 

Before that, the Cambridge-educated executive worked for nine years at Weetabix Food Company as group operations director and he also undertook several senior operational roles at Boots Healthcare International and GlaxoSmithKline, in London.

Describing the search process as comprehensive and competitive, Bill Showalter, chief executive of Young’s, said: “I’m pleased to announce Duncan McIntyre is joining Young’s Seafood to support the delivery of the business’s strategic objectives.

“Duncan’s extensive operational experience will be extremely valuable as we look to execute our long-term growth strategy.”

It comes as Ross House has this month welcomed Tim Busby as chief financial officer. Prior to joining Young’s, he was a director at Hallmark, responsible for the finance and strategy of the international group of companies with a total turnover of £300 million, comprising businesses in the UK, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the USA. 

As reported, he succeeded Malcolm Lofts, who retired at the end of the year, though is continuing to support the company in an advisory capacity.

In a statement, Young's said that throughout his career, Mr McIntyre has played a key role in modernising operations functions, contributing to industry-leading profit margins and top-line growth, improving global supply chain performances and customer service.

He will join Young’s on March 12, with Mr Lidgett to retire at the end of April, and the company on a new-market expansion, having launched in the US while eyeing up Europe and China.

Mr McIntyre said: “I’m delighted to be joining the team at Young’s Seafood. Young’s is recognised as the UK’s number one fish and seafood business with a reputation for quality across multiple categories supplying the retail and foodservice sectors. I’m very much looking forward to playing a role in driving the business forward.”
