Riverhead cinema complex set for council approval

Work on Grimsby's £20 million cinema complex could soon be given the green light to begin as council planners prepare to rubber stamp the construction of the ambitious scheme.
After months of planning and with excitement continuing to build, North East Lincolnshire Council is finally set to give the definitive go-ahead to a vision to transform Grimsby town centre.
Initial plans for the major leisure complex, which will house a nine screen cinema and seven restaurants, were first unveiled to shoppers earlier this year.
But following the release of stunning artists impressions that whetted the appetite of locals, council planners have now recommended the scheme for official approval.
The fate of the vast cinema and restaurant complex lies with councillors on the planning committee, who will cast a vote on December 6, at Grimsby Town Hall, to decide if the scheme should go ahead or not.
They will be presented with the detailed plans for the complex, which includes, seven new restaurant units that will be home to a host of leading national operators new to Grimsby.
In recommending the scheme for approval, NELC planning officers say that work must begin by 2020 if given the go-ahead.
And with construction expected to take in the region of 12 to 14 months to complete, shoppers could soon expect to be dining at brand new Italian and Portuguese restaurants, as well as an ice cream parlour and new coffee shop, during an evening out at the cinema.
The cinema complex will built over a large new entrance to Freshney Place, which will feature as a centre-piece of the development.
This will mean the building is multi-storey, with restaurants on the ground floor, overlooking the Riverhead marina, and cinema screens built above and to the right, as the development is looked at face on.
The cinema will seat 1,600 people in total and the Riverhead building is planned around a central mall. Shoppers will walk under the cinema complex along a walkway which passes the fancy new bars and restaurants, leading shoppers to the shopping centre mall deep within the complex.
It comes as a huge £4.1 million redevelopment of four key areas of Grimsby town centre has officially been given the go ahead.
Set to be completed in just over two years' time, councillors rubbed stamped the ambitious plans for Riverhead Square, Cartergate, St James Square and Town Hall Square.
The programme, which will be delivered by March 2020, has been funded through a successful £3.682 million bid from the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership (Humber LEP) and £450,000 from the council itself.
The multi-million pound project involves the flattening of St James House, as well as infrastructure and public realm works including an enhanced pedestrian link between Riverhead Square and Alexandra Dock to support delivery of the £20m cinema/leisure development at Riverhead Square.
Its completion will pave the way and lay the foundations for the cinema complex to finally take shape.
It would also contribute to the Greater Grimsby Town Deal, a £100m investment plan, creating 5,400 jobs, 7,700 new homes to boost our local economy by more than £216 million.
This involves a sports and leisure plan for the recently bought Victoria Mills, as well as further land acquisitions to create improved residential, business and education opportunities, eventually stretching to the Kasbah on Grimsby Docks.
North East Lincolnshire Council's planning committee will meet at 9.30am on December 6 to discuss the plans.
