Sea View Street plaza plans
11th March 2019
Proposals for the plaza area at the top of Sea View Street have been agreed by Cabinet at the meeting on 11 March 2019.
Following the start of the first phase of the exciting Coastal Communities Funded project in Cleethorpes, residents, local businesses and special interest groups were given the chance to have their say on two proposed designs for the creation of a plaza area at the top of Sea View Street in Cleethorpes.
The design for works in Sea View Street was approved by the Cabinet in August 2018, when it was agreed that detailed design options for the plaza would be prepared and put to the public to identify a preferred option.
The design options presented included the introduction of a new public space to replace the existing surface car park at the top of Seaview Street which will provide a unique gathering space at the highest point within the resort.
Following an open event and an online consultation earlier this month, more than 350 responses were received, with a clear preference being expressed for Option A. This design has now been updated to reflect some of the comments received and the final design has been prepared in collaboration with artist, Katayoun Dowlatshahi who has used the natural environment as her inspiration. This is reflected in the design which focuses on the study of tidal movement and coastal planting.
The design also includes the reintroduction of street trees, which were a significant feature of the original Victorian resort, seating and imaginative lighting.
The aim is to create a place where people can pause, meet friends and take in the views over the estuary and enjoy the impressive backdrop of historic buildings.
Cllr Peter Wheatley, Cabinet member for regeneration, said, “We promised to come back to the local residents and businesses with some options for the plaza area of Sea View Street, and I’d like to thank people for giving us their views. It’s an important area of the resort, much used during events like the Armed Forces Day, so we want to make it as welcoming as possible.”
The plaza will be delivered as part of the wider programme of works around the Sea View Street which will be on site during Autumn 2019.
