The best of Lincolnshire celebrated at free food and drink festival at Grimsby Institute

Hundreds of people celebrated Lincolnshire Day by sampling the finest produce the county has to offer at the Grimsby Telegraph’s Live Local food and drink festival.

It showcased all the best produce made in the historic county.

The free show was held at Grimsby Institute, Nuns Corner and people were queuing to get in for demonstrations by the county’s top chefs, Rachel Green and Colin McGurran.

There were lots of free samples for visitors to enjoy including smoke salmon from Alfred Enderby, Birkett's pork pies, Pin Gin and Fab beers.

Rachel, who was born in Grimsby, said: “I have never been looked after so well. That is the Great Grimsby welcome for you.”

She gave a demonstration to show how to make smoked salmon from Alfred Enderby Ltd with bladed Tuscan cabbage and Dambuster cheese. For pudding she showed how to best prepared Pocklington's Lincolnshire plumbread with pain perdu.

Rachel told how she was thrilled to be working with the salmon smoked by Alfred Enderby and was a welcome addition to her recipes which usually include skate and plaice from Grimsby.

Colin, who is the chef at Winteringham Fields said: “Lincolnshire’s produce is famous throughout the world for its vegetables and farmland and then of course its docks. Grimsby docks is a force to reckon with.”

He said he can regularly be seen at Grimsby fish market selecting individual monk or turbot fish and shellfish.

He said: "It is always fresh."

As well as continuing the world class reputation of Wintringham Fields, he and his family own The Hope and Anchor at South Ferriby.

First in the queue to see the top chefs was Betty Oldham from Waltham.

“We have come to see Rachel and pick up some tips,” she told.

Grimsby Morris men performed in the Alfresco area.

There was also a chance to drive an articulated lorry thanks to a simulator set up by one of the largest transporters of food in the UK, DFDS.

Coreen Penheiro-Wharton said: "Everyday we are transporting food across Europe and throughout the UK. A lot of it is fish from Scotland to French markets. We deliver a lot of Scottish salmon and shellfish throughout the UK."

Children had the chance to drive a remote-controlled model truck around an obstacle course set up by DFDS.

The festival at the institute also gave budding lorry drivers the chance to sit in the cab of a Scania lorry.

Owner of Alfred Enderby Ltd, Patrick Salmon told how his smoke fish is used by top chefs Rick Stein and Marco Pierre White and served in the country's finest restaurants The Ivy and Scott's Mayfair in London.

He encouraged people to visit the smokery on Maclure Street, Grimsby docks to see the process in action.

He has launched a campaign to get Grimsby smoked salmon protected geographical indication to provide traditional specialities guaranteed.

Patrick said: "Our products are especially popular online with customers ordering our luxurious salmon to send as a unique gift to their customers and friends. It is a great gift to say hello or thank you and we are already taking orders for Christmas."

Another attraction at the festival was Scaman's eggs of Little Grimsby. Simone Scaman told how the firm is in line for two awards at the Select Lincolnshire promotion this month as business of the year and People's Choice.

There was a lot of interest in the designer egg cups Scaman's sell online including the Batman egg cup complete with the bat logo shape to cut toast to have with their eggs. The sell for £9.99 and come complete with half a dozen Scaman's eggs.

Peter Hardy, manager of Birkett's butchers of Grimsby, which has been in business 100 years, was handing out free samples of pork pie and plum bread to many visitors.

"It is nice to get Lincolnshire food on the map and good to have a platform to show off all the produce," he said.

He looks after 36 staff at the three stores in Cromwell Road, Heneage Road and the Top Town market.

Grimsby Telegraph events manager, Kimberley Spauls was thrilled the tickets for the live demonstrations were snapped up within 10 minutes.

"The festival has been all about Lincolnshire food and drink and keeping it local will all our finest ale, gin and pickles and fresh fish."

Visitor Graeme Bassett said: "It is very impressive at the festival. It shows how special all the types of food that comes out of Lincolnshire is. The taste of smoked fish is something unique to Grimsby and it is worth celebrating."

Many of the visitors enjoyed free bags of crisps in a variety of flavours from Piper's Crisps of Brigg.

After Lincolnshire’s Got Talent winner Christos Spiteri entertained in the morning session Billy Beach performing on stage in the afternoon. There were also live cooking demonstration.

There were lots of free samples for visitors to enjoy including smoke salmon from Alfred Enderby, Birkett's pork pies, Pin Gin and Fab beers.
