Town retailer’s plans for Grimsby’s Grade II listed Castle Press approved

PLANNERS have given the go-ahead for the conversion of Grimsby’s Grade II listed Castle Press to become the new home for furnishing giant Stevenson Group.
The former 1st Lincoln Artillery Barracks is set to become a prestigious retail outlet for the family firm that has traded in the town for more than 100 years.
According to the application, the plan is for the current three outlets in Grimsby – Allenby Stevenson carpets in Victoria Street South and Stevensons Furniture Centre and Dreamworld in Cleethorpe Road – to be united as one, on the main route into the town centre from the A180.
Once occupied by Albert Gait, the renowned printing business was bought out by Wyndeham Press Group, but was closed back in April 2015, ending a 155 year run in the town.
Brothers Michael and Richard Gait, fifth generations in the business, stepped down in September 2013, with Wyndeham having taken an initial interest in the independent Grimsby company, renowned for its Thomas Cook rail timetables, in 1993.

Now the change of use and alterations have been passed under delegated powers by North East Lincolnshire Council, with the reinstatement of the original front door, as well as further access from the car park, the only significant exterior changes.
Inside a mezzanine floor will be added to what was once the drill hall, significantly adding to the 30,000 sq ft it currently offers.
Acquired after it had been entered into an auction in late 2015, Allenby Stevenson is currently using the modern warehouse element of the one acre site, which backs on to Alexandra Dock, and neighbours High Point Retail Park and Victoria Mills on the A16 Victoria Street North.
Stevenson Group director Claire Braithwaite, who made the application with agent and architectural designer David Hickinson, said decisions on timeframe for the development have yet to be made, though planning officers have set a three year deadline on works.
In the design statement submitted to the local authority, they said: “The proposals will have a positive impact on the local economy.
“It will see a well-established local retailer consolidate various premises into one unit/operation, within a successful retail area of Grimsby in good proximity to Grimsby town centre. It will also provide employment for local business during the construction phase.”
Not only will it bring a protected, highly visible building back into use, it will see two of the area’s biggest independent furnishers go head-to-head, as Lees sits virtually opposite, with national names also located on the neighbouring retail parks.
